Who is Ben Ku?

I am not a career politician. I am a problem solver. I bring a unique, visionary, and inclusive perspective to the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners.

Professional Problem Solver

I am a Georgia native. My mother is an artist and my father is a doctor and engineer. My unique perspective combines art and science, and I try to live in the intersection of the two.

Ben's Family
My wonderful supportive family

I’m the grandson of Chinese immigrants. My grandfather was an engineer who helped to design Atlanta's MARTA rail. I hope to continue that legacy by bringing rapid transit to Gwinnett County.

Graduation with my Grandparents

I grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta and took advantage of the HOPE scholarship to graduate with highest honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Over my life, I have embraced my many passions and have been lucky enough to have worked to solve problems in a variety of industries. I my diverse background and experience allows me to bring a unique and modern perspective to the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners.

I moved to Gwinnett to claim my own piece of America and have a yard for my two adorable dachshunds to play in. Soon after, I stepped up to be president of my neighborhood's HOA board. I have helped to re-engage the neighborhood, improve our web and communications presence, and reverse the trend of dwindling reserves to build the cash reserves. I was able to accomplish this by working cooperatively with my neighbors, even ones with drastically different poliltical views.

In 2016, I graduated with the fall cohort of the Gwinnett 101 Citizens Academy (created by Nicole Love Hendrickson) and it was because of that experience that I fell in love with Gwinnett County. I was amazed to see how much attention was given to public services, infrastructure, and planning. After graduation, I was asked to help with the creation of the Gwinnett 101 Advisory Board. Gwinnett County even honored me with the Distinguished Service Award for Most Volunteered Hours in 2017. Then in 2018, I was elected to the Board of Commissioners solidly defeating a two-term incumbent. I was one of the fastest to complete my county commissioner training.

In 2018, I was elected to the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners where I have been serving as one of the first people of color elected to the BOC, the first Asian American, the first openly LGBTQ, and the first Millenial member of the BOC.

The 2019 Board of Commissioners
Ben was one of the first democrats elected in 30 years in Gwinnett.

In 2020, three new commissioners were elected, including the founder of the Gwinnett 101 citizen's academy, Nicole Love Hendrickson, and my fellow Gwinnett 101 alumns Kirkland Carden and Jasper Watkins. It was my drive and effort that allowed us to create new Vision, Mission, and Values that now include Equity, Inclusivity, and Innovation which were surprisingly absent from prior values.

The 2021 Board of Commissioners
I was instrumental in bringing these leaders together to craft Gwinnett's new Vision, Mission, and Values.
